The Department of Civil Engineering, in association with AAA Engineering Solutions, successfully organized a one-day Professional Hands-on Training on SketchUp and Lumion for Civil Engineering students on July 16, 2026. The programme aimed to strengthen students' industry-ready skills in 3D modelling, architectural visualization, and rendering technologies.
Dr. Mohamed Usman T. M., Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, welcomed the dignitaries, resource persons, faculty members, and students. In his address, he emphasized the department's motto of bridging the gap between academia and industry through practical skill-development programmes that equip students with competencies demanded by the constrution industries. The gathering was felicitated by Dr. Tharvish Mohideen S, Dean Academic, who highlighted the tremendous opportunities available in the Civil Engineering profession. He encouraged students to continuously upgrade their technical skills and adopt modern digital tools such as SketchUp and Lumion to remain competitive in the evolving engineering sector. He stressed that skill development is the foundation for professional excellence and career success.
Dr. Madhan Kumar K, Principal, addressed the participants and spoke about the rapid transformation of the construction industry driven by infrastructure development, smart cities, sustainable construction, and increasing domestic and international investments. He explained that these developments have created diverse employment opportunities for Civil Engineering graduates and urged students to acquire advanced software skills to enhance their employability.
The technical session was introduced by Dr. Mohamed Saifullah S. M., Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, elaborated on the growing importance of SketchUp and Lumion in architectural design, project visualization, and construction planning. Also, he discussed current industry requirements and explained how proficiency in these software packages significantly improves career prospects for aspiring civil engineers. The hands-on training was delivered by Er. Mohamed Ismail Harith, an alumnus of PET Engineering College and representative of AAA Engineering Solutions. He guided students through the fundamentals of SketchUp and Lumion, demonstrating professional modelling techniques, rendering workflows, lighting, materials, and visualization methods used in industry.
During the morning session, students learned the fundamentals of SketchUp and Lumion through live demonstrations and interactive discussions. The afternoon session was devoted entirely to practical hands-on training, where students applied the concepts by developing their own 3D models and renderings under expert guidance.
To reinforce learning beyond the workshop, students were assigned individual design projects and follow-up assignments. These projects will be continuously monitored through a structured follow-up programme, enabling students to refine their skills with periodic mentoring. The completed projects will be submitted for evaluation, ensuring sustained learning and practical competency.
The programme was efficiently coordinated by Mr. Petchimuthu E., Assistant Professor, Civil department, who ensured the smooth conduct of all sessions. He concluded the event by delivering the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the management, Principal, Dean Academic, resource persons, faculty members, AAA Engineering Solutions, and the enthusiastic student participants for making the programme a grand success.
The training programme received an excellent response from students, who appreciated the opportunity to gain practical exposure to industry-standard software, reinforcing PET Engineering College's commitment to producing highly skilled and industry-ready Civil Engineering graduates.
