Bio based Products for a Sustainable Bio Economy

Event Report


Five days Workshop on "Biobased products for a Sustainable Bio-Economy" was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, PET Engineering College, Vallioor from 19-04-2021 to 23-04-2021. Dr. K. Tamilarasan, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department, VEL Tech R&D Institute of Science & Technology, Chennai was the resource person for this workshop. 33 students of final year, 19 students of third year and 11 students of second year had attended the workshop.

Mr. D. Bright Kingsly, final year student of Civil Department welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. Mr. M. Petchikkan, Head of the Department introduced the resource person. Dr. K. Madhan Kumar, Principal, PET Engineering College, delivered the inaugural address and handed over the session to the resource person. The resource person started the session by explaining the short tutorial on Bio-Economy. He explained in detail about requirement of circular Bio-economy, damage caused natural deflection, value added products produced from secondary agricultural products.

The resource person also explained the need for sustainable innovation and how bio refinery, bio conversion, and bio based production can contribute to this. The third day the resource person started the session by explaining Bio based products – about their production and commercialization of bioenergy and biopolymers. The fourth day the resource person explained, bio surfactants, bio flavours and further gives real-life examples with future perspective. The fifth day the resource person describes the different types of biomass, and discuss scope of bio economy in Indian context. The students enthusiastically participated in the hands-on session.

Test session was conducted, to know the level of understanding in these 5 days certificate program. The valedictory function was held on 23.04.2021. Our honorable Principal Dr. K. Madhan Kumar, Mr. M. Petchikkan, Head of the Department and Mr. V. Ruban Daniel, Assistant Professor, Civil Department were presided the valedictory function. Some of the participants expressed their experiences in the workshop. The function ended with vote of thanks by Mr. Buhari Siam, Third year student of Civil Department who expressed his gratitude towards all the dignitaries, participants and all other helping hands, which contributed towards the success of the event.
